Are all Guitar Effects made by Boss digital?
I know Boss is owned by Roland, a big synthesizer company, so it would make sense for Boss's effects to be modelled digitally. But are all effects made by Boss digital, or do they offer analog as well?
In a very general sense, most pedals are not "digital" unless they are multieffect or delay pedals.
Remember, digital doesn't mean "uses integrated circuits" it means that there is a conversion from analog to digital code, the code is processed in a microcontroller or dedicated effect chip, then the code is passed through a digital to analog converter, where it exits the pedal.
All Line 6 products are digital, for instance. Some of them have tubes or whatnot as well, but the heart of the device is a digital chip and algorithms.
Any Boss product that says COSM is digital. Anything with an LED display is digital. Anything that is a multieffect is digital.
Delay pedals aren't necessarily digital - they may use specialized IC chips that are created to provide the signal delay, but they aren't all "digital" per se. Then again, its cheaper to use digital these days, if you're mass producing 'em....
Anyways, here's a link to Boss' support documents. Many of the pedals will say "digital" right in the title.
Modulation (flange, chorus, phaser, etc) are often analog, although there are exceptions, sure. Its still no big deal to wire a few all-pass filters together and create a good sounding Phaser Pedal vs putting the extra chips in to do it digitally.
That, and distortion - distortion pedals are *easy* to design, have less complex circuits, and therefore are more often analog than digital.
Hoo boy, I'm starting to think of exceptions to everything I've just said, so I'll leave it at that. Good rules of thumb, but its best to do research on anything you find anyways!
Good luck!
